Absence Of Djokovic And Murray Opens The Door
The absence of the injured Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray is significant as they have won six (three each) of the past seven Shanghai titles between them, with only Federer breaking their dominance by landing the 2014 title
The Swiss legend returns to competitive action for the first time since his shock US Open quarter-final defeat but expect him to be fresh for a big push towards the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals. Federer currently trails Rafa Nadal by 2,160 points in the ATP Rankings and we are backing the veteran to close that gap by winning a sixth title of a stunning 2017 campaign that has yielded a 39-4 win-loss record so far.
Federer is a best price 11/4 with Unibet and that is a very nice price as he doesn't really face any stiff competition in the bottom-half of the draw until the last-eight, where he could meet the in-form David Goffin, who has won back-to-back titles in Shenzhen and Japan respectively.
However, it will be a big ask for Goffin to win three in a row and he faces a first tough first match in Shanghai where he is due to meet Gilles Simon, who could be worth an each-way look at 200/1 as the Frenchman was runner-up in this event in 2014 and he reached the semi's twelve months ago.
The Top-Half Of The Draw
Rafael Nadal (5/2 with Betfred) is the headline act in the top-half of the draw and the US Open champion is unbeaten since he returned to the World No. 1 ranking in August. The Spaniard beat Nick Kyrgios in the final of Beijing on Sunday but he has a relatively poor record in Shanghai, where he has gone 12-7 with a best finish of runner-up from 2009.
Kyrgios might recognise that this is a decent opportunity for revenge after losing in the final of Beijing and he is pencilled in to meet Nadal in the semi-finals. The faster courts should suit the enigmatic Australian, who could still reach the ATP World Tour Finals with a big performance in Shanghai.
Kyrgios can be backed at 16/1 (Coral) and he makes more appeal than Marin Cilic, who has only gone beyond the third round in Shanghai once, and the inconsistent Grigor Dimitrov in the top-half.
