Alternative Betting Directory Sporting Awards 2016

At this time of year we are being bombarded with end of year reviews, sporting awards and popularity contests but with Christmas fast approaching we have decided to dish out our own gongs, but with a twist.

Rather than celebrate the obvious from the sporting world, we have taken a closer look at the opposite end of the spectrum with one or two less heralded moments and teams coming under our spotlight...

Biggest Disappointment - Red Monday Sees Viewers Slip Into A Coma

Anyone that witnessed Red Monday back in October is yet to recover and to be honest it is going to take a lot longer than a few months to get over the 90 minute Anfield monstrosity.

Sky Sports seemed to spend the best part of a two weeks talking about the game between Liverpool and Man United earlier this season, but whilst we all got sucked into the hype, one man didn't, and his name is Jose Mourinho.

The Special One has proven time and time again that he loves to kill a game of football and with millions watching on TV and around the world, he did it again. It was a Mourinho masterclass as Man United camped inside their own half and with Liverpool unable to break them down, it turned into one of the worst games of football you could possibly see.

Football was the loser that night.

Villain of the Year - Gone In 67 Days

Sixty-seven days...

Just when you think the England team and the FA can't sink any lower, up pops up 2016 and we are proven wrong...

A shocking display during Euro 2016 was bad enough with Roy Hodgson made to walk the plank following a truly dismal display but for England fans that turned out to be the high point of the year!

The next taxi on the rank was Sam Allardyce but few would have predicted how quickly he would find a way to ruin his career.

After one dodgy away win in Slovakia, Big Sam was filmed talking about the potential to work around 3rd party ownership rules in football and that was that. Sacked with a 100% record and before he even had a chance to tempt Kevin Davies out of retirement.

Allardyce retreated to his villa in Spain to work on his tan and pick up a new gold chain whilst the FA were left to pick up the pieces. A shambles from start to finish.

Top work Sam.

Worst Loser - Cam Super Bowl Sulk

Heading into Super Bowl 50 there looked likely to be only winner as the Carolina Panthers played the Denver Broncos.

Carolina and star QB Cam Newton had ripped their way through the regular season, and the play-offs, and were expected to be far too strong for the Broncos, but is fair to say that the Panthers and their key man froze.

Newton choked on the biggest stage of them all and his performance in the post-game press conference was similar to that of a toddler. Losing is tough to take, and he is clearly a superstar, but whilst his team-mates managed to give full and frank interviews to the press, Newton could hardly muster a word to the assembled press after a underperforming in front of the eyes of the world.

Newton walked out of the press conference after less than five minutes of one word answers and the team have never recovered, with the Panthers going from Super Bowl favourites to out of the play-offs just a season later.

Shock of the Year - The Cubbies End The Billy Goat Curse

Yeah, yeah, yeah we have all heard about Leicester City winning the Premier League but something equally as magical was going on in the world of baseball in the good old U S of A.

Not since 1908 had the Chicago Cubs won the World Series but in famous scenes back in October, the Cubbies finally put to rest the Curse of the Billy Goat.

William Slanis (and his goat) was ejected from Wrigley Field in 1945 due to the smell and the story goes that he declared "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more."

A number of near misses have followed for the Cubs since the curse was placed in 1945 but they finally reached another World Series in 2016. Perhaps even more remarkably they managed to come back, despite looking dead and buried in the World Series itself, to win the deciding game and end one of the longest droughts in sporting history.

How 'bout those Cubbies?

Foot In Mouth Moment of the Year - Thanks Bro!

What a year Danny Willett was having. Just a few months after slipping into the Green Jacket, the Englishman was preparing to play in his first Ryder Cup in the States and then his brother decided to open his mouth.

Just days before the first tee shot at the Ryder Cup back in September, Peter Willett branded American golf fans "fat, stupid, greedy and classless."

The comments, however true they were, immediately put the spotlight on Danny Willett and predictably he endured a torrid debut in the team competition with Europe well beaten.

Thanks a lot bro.
