Unfortunately to hand Burke Middle Park Stakes victory at Newmarket

Saturday 30th September, 2017 - 2:55pm Newmarket - Middle Park Stakes

Aidan O'Brien will saddle a four-pronged attack in the Middle Park Stakes, which takes place at Newmarket on Cambridgeshire day on Saturday afternoon, but the Ballydoyle supremo will have a host of classy two-year-olds to beat with his quartet, and the in-form duo of Sands Of Mali and Unfortunately will be a brace of notable runners in what should be a highly competitive contest at Flat racing headquarters.

  • Three of the last six winners have been priced 22/1 or bigger
  • Unfortunately and Sioux Nation were both Group 1 winners last time out
  • Sands Of Mali stormed to Gimcrack victory at York

Premier Contenders

Richard Fahey's Sands Of Mali impressed on his second start when landing a Nottingham maiden event, but it was an impressive two-and-three-quarter length victory in the Gimcrack Stakes at York that launched him into the Group picture, and he will bid for a third win in a row on Saturday, and has been installed as the 4/1 favourite with Paddy Power for this Group 1 prize.

He beat Cardsharp (12/1) that day on the Knavesmire, and has the potential to improve again, but while he has performed well on rain-softened ground of late, he will struggle to make all, like he did in the Gimcrack, and he could possibly find one outdoing him in the closing stages of this event, so his run of wins could end.

Karl Burke's Unfortunately has been mainly plying his trade in France, and he produced a career best last time out when storming to glory in the Prix Morny, and the 9/2 chance with BetVictor is one that could be on his way to Flat stardom, and setting the standard here could well outclass his rivals.

Sioux Nation is the first shot fired by the O'Brien gun, and having won the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot he then went on to down Beckford (7/1 with Betfair) in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, and the former can frank the form here, and the Ballydoyle raider is potentially the main contender to Unfortunately, and is a best-priced 5/1 with Coral bookmakers.

Each Way Players

Richard Spencer's Rajasinghe was one of the early season juvenile stars, as he landed the Coventry Stakes in emphatic style, but having been beaten by Cardsharp in the July Stakes he has been off the track, and at 10/1 with Unibet is one to avoid, as he is back in against race-fit rivals, and this could be too much of a strong task on his return to the track.

US Navy Flag is another O'Brien runner, but he was down the field in the abovementioned Phoenix Stakes, and despite winning last time out, will struggle at 11/1 with Ladbrokes, while Hey Jonesy (16/1) and Frozen Angel (33/1) are another duo that deserve to take their chance, but could ultimately struggle in a race that can go the way of one of the fancied runners towards the head of the betting.
