Label Des Obeaux tipped to land Scottish Grand National glory at Ayr
Saturday 21st April, 2018 - 4:05pm Ayr - Coral Scottish Grand National
A hugely-competitive field will line up for the 2018 Coral Scottish Grand National, which takes centre stage at Ayr on Saturday afternoon, and it will see the Paul Nicholls-trained Vicente bid for a third win in the race, but the Ditcheat inmate will face a whole host of lively rivals in what is a thrilling betting heat.
- Vicente has won the last two renewals
- Only three of the last ten winners have carried 11st or more
- Four of the last five winners have been priced 12/1 or bigger

Having been a surprise winner in 2016, Vicente produced another sparkling performance 12 months ago to retain his crown, and having missed last weekend's engagement in the Grand National at Aintree, the Nicholls charge will aim to land a hat-trick of wins, and is a 9/1 chance with William Hill to make it three on the spin,
However, he will have to defy another rise in the handicap for this year's event, and he has been struggling to find any consistency all season, so while he has to be a leading each-way contender, he could be one that struggles off his current mark, and it's worth looking elsewhere for a possible win bet.
Vintage Clouds just missed out on a spot in the Grand National last weekend, but Sue Smith's runner has shown ability over fences, and looks a leading contender at 10/1 with Betfair, while Ballyoptic is slowly improving over the larger obstacles, and at 10/1 with Betfred is another eye-catching runner towards the head of the betting.
Gordon Elliott tasted Aintree glory last week with Tiger Roll, and the Irish handler will saddle Fagan here, but the 12/1 chance with William Hill needs to improve on what he has shown on the track, as does Doing Fine (12/1) for Neil Mulholland, who often runs a decent race, but needs to show much better to get his head in front here.
Each Way Players
With 30 runners lining up in the 3m 7f 176y marathon then there will be a whole host of leading contenders at decent odds and Nicky Henderson's duo of Gold Present (16/1 with Paddy Power) and Beware The Bear (20/1 with Coral) are worth looking at closely, but while the former will have the burden of top weight, the latter ran a decent race when fourth in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and he has to have a squeak here.
One at a tasty price that could go very close is the Alan King-trained Label Des Obeaux, who has winning form at Ayr, having won the novices' handicap chase at this meeting 12 months ago, and at 20/1 with Coral is a cracking bet in what is real punting head-scratcher.
He is 1lb lower in the handicap than when he won that Ayr novice event last year, so if he can bounce back to that sort of form then has to be a real contender here, and could well land the prize for his Barbury Castle handler, and is our selection in this thrilling renewal north of the border.
Sizing Tennessee will relish this test of stamina, and is one that is sure to be doing his best work at the finish, and is eye-catching at 16/1 with Betfred, while the likes of West Approach (33/1) and Benbens (40/1) add more depth to what should be a thrilling feature race on a sparkling card at Ayr.
