Librisa Breeze tipped to strike in wide open Lockinge Stakes at Newbury
Saturday 19th May - 3:40pm Newbury - Lockinge Stakes
One of the highlights of the entire Flat campaign takes centre stage at Newbury on Saturday afternoon as a host of top-class milers do battle in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes, and there will be a bumper field bidding for glory in the eight-furlong showpiece with some vital clues being served up for the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.
- The last four winners have been aged four
- Lightning Spear finished second in the 2017 Lockinge
- Addeybb has progressed from handicap company this season
|Saturday - 3.40pm||Odds||Tips|
|Librisa Breeze (each way) Best Bet||16/1|
Aidan O'Brien last saddled the winner of the Lockinge in 2003 when Hawk Wing stormed to victory, but the master of Ballydoyle will unleash a four-pronged attack in this year's renewal and it will be Oaks runner-up and Prix de L'Opera winner Rhododendron that will fly the flag for O'Brien and she has been inroduced as 4/1 favourite with William Hill bookmakers.
A model of consistency last term, she kicked off this year with a fourth-placed finish in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp, and she is sure to improve for that outing, but she will face a whole host of classy male rivals here, and she may just have to settle for minor honours on the big stage again.
William Haggas's Addeybb propelled into the limelight when bounding to an impressive win in the Lincoln Handicap, and that followed up with a fine display in the bet365 Mile, but he now jumps into the Group 1 sphere, and may find it tough at 11/2 with Betfred, while Limato (9/2 with Ladbrokes) has shown that he is a top notch performer, but the mile can stretch him somewhat, so he maybe another that struggles.
Andrew Balding's Beat The Bank progressed nicely last season, but the 8/1 chance with Coral failed to land a blow in Group 1 company, and may struggle here, while Roger Varian's Zabeel Prince is another prominent figure in the betting, but he will need to improve immeasurably from a Listed win last time out to feature here.
Dean Ivory's Librisa Breeze could be put in the same bracket as Limato in the fact that he can perform at his best over six and seven furlongs, as shown when he bounded to victory in the British Champions Sprint Stakes at the end of last season, but if he can replicate that Group 1-winning form here then he marks terrific value at 16/1 with Betfed.
Unlike Limato, Ivory's six-year-old does have winning form over a mile from his younger days, and if he can travel smoothly in the early stages of the race, before unleashing his rapid turn of foot then he could well down some of his classy rivals and etch his name alongsides some of the greats of the one-mile division.
Best Of The Rest
Lancaster Bomber (12/1) and Deauville (18/1) will be another two lively contenders sent to Newbury by the above-mentioned O'Brien, and the former looks to have the most chance of that Ballydoyle pairing, while Suedois (16/1 with Betfred) is another classy performer on his day, and has to be worth a second look.
Clive Cox's Zonderland has failed to reach the heights of his younger days, but could run a decent race at 33/1 with Ladbrokes, while David Simcock's Lightning Spear ran a huge race when second in the race 12 months ago, and at 16/1 with most firms could be a decent each-way play.
