Who Dares Wins tipped to shine in Betfred Cesarewitch at Newmarket
Saturday 14th October, 2017 - 3:40pm Newmarket - Betfred Cesarewitch Handicap
One of the races in the Flat calendar that will be targeted by a host of National Hunt trainers, the 2017 renewal of the Betfred Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket is set to be a devilishly difficult assignment for punters as well, as a 34-strong field head to the 2m 2f start, and we are set for a hugely competitive renewal on Saturday afternoon.
- National Hunt-trained runners have won two of the last three renewals
- Three of the last five winners have been priced 50/1 or bigger
- One of the last eight winners have carried more than 9st

John Constable will be one of those National Hunt-trained contenders lining up and Evan Williams' raider will be having his first run on the level for 1,147 days, but off an attractive mark of 88 the 8/1 favourite with Betfred has to be considered a lively challenger, as he was last seen winning a Listed race over hurdles at Market Rasen, and if he can emulate that display will be tough to beat here.
Alan King trained Grumeti to victory two years ago, and the Barbury Castle handler will saddle Who Dares Wins, who was an impressive winner of the Cesarewitch Trial last month, and at 12/1 with Paddy Power, is one that could just have a little more race sharpness than John Constable, so of that Jumps-trained duo is the one to be with.
Lagostovegas is an eye-catching runner for Willie Mullins, and the Co. Carlow inmate was another seen over hurdles last time out, but with Ryan Moore in the saddle has to be respected at 11/1 with bet365, while the Roger Charlton-trained Withhold returned after nearly a year off with a third placed finish at Newbury, and the 14/1 chance with Ladbrokes is sure to improve for that run.
Karen McLintock's Dubawi Fifty (14/1) is one of the in-form Flat horses, but he has another 5lb rise in the handicap to deal with, and may just be vulnerable to some more attractively handicapped rivals, while the likes of Time To Study (14/1) and Endless Acres (16/1) are another prominent duo in the betting, and are worthy of respect.
Each Way Players
London Prize was a fine winner of the Northumberland Plate consolation race at Newcastle last time out, and while the Ian Williams-trained star will need to defy a rise in the weights, the 20/1 chance with Paddy Power has shown he relishes these sort of tests, and could be an each-way player in this fascinating contest.
Hughie Morrison saddled Sweet Selection to victory 12 months ago, and will saddle top weight Fun Mac (33/1), who is a decent stayer on his day, while the likes of Swamp Fox (20/1) and Magic Circle (25/1) are another brace of each-way contenders, and with a host of firms offering decent place terms then it's certainly a race with huge betting attraction.
Worth A Mention
Former Grand National-winning trainer Dr Richard Newland will send Duke Street to Newmarket, and the 33/1 chance could well perform with credit here, while Watersmeet and Swashbuckle, both 40/1, add more depth to a race jam-packed with quality, but can ultimately return to Alan King's yard with Who Dares Wins, and that is the selection.
