July Cup Tips: Society Rock Set to Enjoy The Conditions

This weekend sees the biggest six furlong race of the season take place at Newmarket with the Group 1 July Cup taking centre stage. The race is the next leg of the British Champions Series and it is shaping up to be a highly competitive renewal of one of the most famous races in the country.

All the signs point to a win for Bated Breath (Non Runner), he has the best form in the field added to the fact that he came second last year gives him every chance of going one better in a field slightly lacking in depth. Punters wanting to back Bated Breath can get a price of just 5/2 with Ladbrokes which does look a little skinny. He won the the Temple Stakes on firm ground in May before running a good second in the King Stand Stakes last time over the flying five at Royal Ascot last time out.

There are no doubts surrounding the form of Bated Breath and he goes into the July Cup with every chance of claiming Group 1 glory for trainer Roger Charlton. There is however a suggestion that the ground will be a little softer than he would like and with the extra furlong on offer here it may be wise to look elsewhere. Thats exactly why we like the chances of Society Rock at HQ and he could be the value of the field.

The James Fanshawe trained horse was unlucky last time out when 5th in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes after slipping at the start only to fly home in the closing stages to finish only only two lengths behind Black Caviar. Six furlongs is the best trip for Society Rock, he doesn't mind a bit of cut in the ground and with that in mind his price of 4/1 with ladbrokes could prove to be a good bit of value.

Another one at a bigger price that could run a big race is the Richard Hannon trained Libranno who although looks to be the second string for the yard could well be in the mix. The horse ran 4th in the race last year and he looks to be coming back into form at the right time with the two successive wins to his name including last time out at Newmarket. Libranno will no doubt jump straight to the front to set a strong gallop and while it would be a big ask to see him holding on for the win we can see him snatching some place money at a nice price for punters.

Other runners to consider include the classy Strong Suit who is dropping back in trip and the Aussie sprinter Ortensia who should have improved for his recent run at Royal Ascot and should be respected. Bated Breath remains the justifiable favourite on form but we like the chances of Society Rock in the ground and we take him to add another Group 1 to his impressive CV.
