Anthem Alexander A Great Price In July Cup Betting At Newmarket

Saturday 11th July 2015, 3.45pm - July Cup (Newmarket)

There is no doubt whatsoever that the biggest race of the weekend is the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket as some of the best sprinters in training clash in what could be a titanic tussle. This race is even more fascinating as the three-year-old horses step up for the first time to take on their elders and looking through the entry list, we really do have a cracking contest in prospect.

  • Since 1945, only one horse older than five has won the July Cup - Les Arcs (2006)
  • Only two three-year-old horses have won the July Cup in the last 12 years - Dream Ahead (2011) & Sakhee's Secret (2007)

Classy Duo Fighting For Favouritism

The July Cup is of course a Group 1 contest over 6f on the July Course at Newmarket and we have two horses fighting for favouritism as we speak. It is always great to have an Australian sprinter over during the British summer and that is what we have here in the form of Brazen Beau who will be having his second start in this country for trainer Chris Waller.

Owned by Godolphin, Brazen Beau was last seen running an excellent race in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot when half a length second to Undrafted over 6f. He ran a massive race away from the pace that day and a repeat of that run will see him go very close indeed at a price of 9/4 with Sky Bet.

Brazen Beau has been fancied for the July Cup ever since that Ascot run and it is great he has remained in the UK for this one but in truth this race could be even harder than the Diamond Jubilee with some stellar names set to oppose the Aussie sprinter.

The best of those opponents according to the market is the excellent Muhaarar (9/4) who was the brilliant winner of the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot last time out and is representing the younger horses. The Charles Hills trained horse jumped out of the pack to win that inaugural Commonwealth Cup with the quick ground and trip clearly in his favour.

Muhaarar won the Greenham earlier this season over 7f so is a strong stayer over this 6f trip while he could still have improvement to come which does make a fascinating contender and one that should run well.

Best of the Rest.........

A number of these were last seen at Royal Ascot and one that did catch the eye in Berkshire was Anthem Alexander who ran a big race to finish 3rd in the Commonwealth Cup. The Eddie Lynam trained filly travelled in very eye catching fashion that day on just her second start of the season only to be beaten by Limato and the fast finishing Muhaarar but she more than deserves her place in this field.

A three-year-old filly does face a tough task in a July Cup and that is especially the case this season given the quality of the field but we expect her to improve again ahead of this run which means that backing Anthem Alexander each-way at 14/1 with Bet looks a good bet.

Sole Power (16/1) is a multiple Group 1 winning sprinter and can never be ruled out at this level although at eight, you would worry that his best days are slightly behind him with horses older than five having a terrible record in the July Cup.

The William Haggas trained Muthmir (10/1) is stepping up a furlong after his 3rd place in the King Stand Stakes and could relish the trip, while Tropics (16/1) is another one to consider as he finished 2nd last year although like Sole Power, age could well be against him at this stage of his career.

The July Cup has perhaps not had the best reputation in terms of quality over the past few years but that isn't the case this season with a stellar cast list engaged. We have the best of the older horses in the form of Brazen Beau and Sole Power taking on the younger generation like Anthem Alexander and Muhaarar at HQ which is a mouth-watering prospect. Brazen Beau and Muhaarar deserve to be at the top of the market but both are a short price which means that we will be looking elsewhere for our bet.

Anthem Alexander was a real eye catcher at Royal Ascot and with her age and sex allowance in her favour here, we expect her to improve again and run on into a place at a nice each-way price.

Tip - Anthem Alexander each-way @ 14/1 with Bet Victor
