Tour de France Betting: Brits shining brightest after opening nine stages

Today is the first rest day of the 2016 Tour de France and it marks the perfect opportunity to draw breath and take an in-depth look at what the betting looks like in the General Classification, Points Classification, King of the Mountains, and Young Rider markets.

  • Chris Froome grabbed the Yellow Jersey on Stage 8 and now holds a 16-second lead.
  • Brits have won five of the first nine stages.
  • Three Brits - Froome, Mark Cavendish & Adam Yates - currently hold onto three of the four top Jerseys.

Yellow Jersey - Chris Froome

Chris Froome dipped under evens now 8/11 (Sky Bet) for the first time this tournament after clinching hold of the Yellow Jersey on Saturday following a superb ride on stage 8. In what turned out to be a spur-of-the-moment decision the opportunistic Brit darted clear of his fellow General Classification rivals at the top of the Col de Peyresourde, before unexpectedly showcasing descent skills down the other side.

This cunning move resulted in Froome’s first stage victory of the 2016 Tour, bursting to the top of the standings in spectacular style. The defending champion then defended the Yellow Jersey on Sunday’s rain soaked stage 9, snuffing out attacks from his rivals, meaning the Kenyan-born rider heads into Tuesday’s stage 10 with a 16-second advantage over fellow Brit Yates.

Nairo Quintana remains second in the betting, at 6/4, but with on 23-seconds between himself and Froome he has buckets of time to make his move, expect the pocket-rocket to mount a series of stinging attacks in the coming weeks.

According to the latest odds Froome’s former domestique, Richie Porte (2mins 10secs behind), is now next in the frame at 33/1, followed by Daniel Martin, Fabio Aru, and Romain Bardet, who can all be found at a best-priced 50/1 in the GC market. Froome may be the odds-on favourite, but he is by no means invincible, meaning there is still all to play for, with Mont Ventoux a stage to look out for on Thursday.

Elsewhere Yates, currently second in the standings, can be backed at 80/1 (Coral), whereas Ireland's Daniel Martin of Etixx-QuickStep (3rd) is shorter at 50/1 with most major bookmakers.

Meanwhile, two-time champion Antonio Contador was forced to withdraw during Sunday’s race through illness, while 2014 successor Vincenzo Nibali is a 500/1 long shot after dropping over 34-minutes behind Froome, whereas French favourite Thibaut Pinot also now appears to be out of contention out at 400/1, with a 15-minute gap between himself and the Yellow Jersey.

Green Jersey - Mark Cavendish

2011 Winner Mark Cavendish has been the man of the moment, unexpectedly bagging a hat-trick of stage wins which has seen him sport the Green Jersey for five stages, including the last four. However, the Manxman suffered a hammer blow on Sunday after Mark Renshaw, his key lead-out man for Team Dimension Data, was forced to withdraw from the tour through illness,

Cavendish (8/1 Coral) leads the Points classification with 204 points, but hot on his heels is defending champion Peter Sagan who is bidding to win the PC for the fifth year in a row. The popular Slovak is only seven points adrift and remains the hot favourite to defend his crown (2/9 Bet365), whereas Germany’s Marcel Kittel (8/1 Betfair) is a further 15 points behind.

Polka-Dot Jersey - Thibaut Pinot

Five difference racers have sported the famous Polka-Dot jersey in this year’s tour, with France's Thibaut Pinot becoming the latest to lead the King of the Mountains on Sunday. The Frenchman’s dreams of winning the tour may have evaporated - he’s over 15 minutes behind Froome - but he’s now shifted his focus to the Kings of the Mountains classification, and can currently be found as the 5/2 (Sky Bet) second favourite to achieve this feat.

Rafal Majka, who wore the Polka-Dot jersey on Saturday, remains the frontrunner in the betting at 11/8. The Polish climber won the KOM classification back in 2014, but has stated that regaining the jersey is not his priority, meaning it could be best to look at Pinot, along with other contenders Froome (7/1), Quintana (8/1), and Rui Costa (20/1).

White Jersey - Adam Yates

Adam Yates has enjoyed a stunning Tour de France - only his second - rising to 2nd in the standings at the end of stage 7, then backing that performance up with an impressive 10th place finish on Sunday, as he led home a group of GC contenders including Froome, Quintana, and Porte.

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the most exciting talents on the Tour, and while he’s expected to drop drown the GC - he’s currently only 16 seconds behind Froome - the Orica-BikeExchange rider is now the hot 8/15 (Paddy Power) favourite in the Young Rider Classification market, ahead of Louis Meintjes (3/1) and Wilco Kelderman (11/1).
