The men's tour is well and truly in full swing now as the Madrid Open Masters follows the Monte Carlo Masters in the ATP Tour calendar. From a betting perspective it will be clear who is in form and whose odds to leave well alone by the stage.
It takes place at the beginning of May each year on the clay courts of Madrid and comes ahead of the next Masters 1000 Event of the Rome Masters, which is also played on clay. These Masters events are key for the top players to find some form and the practise on clay is crucial ahead of the French Open at Roland Garros at the end of May.
Rafael Nadal will more than likely head the betting for this event and his pedigree on clay courts is well known. Although up to 2010 he had only won the Madrid Masters twice and it is well worth looking out for the odds of previous winners such as Andy Murray, Roger Federer and David Nalbandian.
It used to be a hard court event up until 2009 though and with the change to clay it means Nadal is very much the man to beat. With a prize fund of 2.835 million (Euros) there is little danger of the world's best players avoiding the challenge and missing out on this event. It is also interestingly a rare best of three sets tournament on the ATP Tour since the move from five sets in 2007.
| Year | Winner | Runner Up | Score |
| 2001 | Tommy Haas | Max Mirnyi | 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 |
| 2002 | Andre Agassi | Jiri Novak | Walkover |
| 2003 | Juan Carlos Ferrero | Nicolas Massu | 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 |
| 2004 | Marat Safin | David Nalbandian | 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 |
| 2005 | Rafael Nadal | Ivan Ljubicic | 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 |
| 2006 | Roger Federer | Fernando Gonzalez | 7-5, 6-1, 6-0 |
| 2007 | David Nalbandian | Roger Federer | 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 |
| 2008 | Andy Murray | Gilles Simon | 6-4, 7-6 |
| 2009 | Roger Federer | Rafael Nadal | 6-4, 6-4 |
| 2010 | Rafael Nadal | Roger Federer | 6-4, 7-6 |
| 2011 | Novak Djokovic | Rafael Nadal | 7-5, 6-4 |
| 2012 | Roger Federer | Tomas Berydch | 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 |
Roger Federer took full advantage of the early exits of Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the controversial blue clay of Madrid to claim this Masters event for the first time since 2005. Tomas Berydch has briefly threatened an upset by winning the first set of the final but Federer eventually won through 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.

The next clay court event in the ATP Tour calendar follows quickly after the Madrid Open in May. The Rome Masters is part of the build up to the Grand Slam event of the French Open and all of the Masters event are great opportunities to have a look how your ante-post betting favourite is doing and a chance to bet on the best players in world tennis.
Clay court players tend to enjoy long rallies rather than fire down quick serves and volley a lot, hence why Rafa Nadal has been the man to beat in recent years on clay in Rome and again at Roland Garros.
He will be at short odds for Rome and it is well worth doing you research to look for some value in the betting for a player to knock Nadal off his perch.....
