The Australian Open is the first Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season and it takes place each year from the middle to the end of January. It is the first of the four Grand Slam events and the other three are of course the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
This opening tournament takes place each year at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne and betting on the tournament has proven to be hugely popular. Bookmakers always provide an array of betting markets so punters can take an ante-post punt on who they think will win the tournament outright, while other markets include live betting in-running on individual matches, as well as odds on who will win the next point, game or set of a particular match!
When considering an ante-post bet on the outright winner, it is well worth noting that Serena Williams have enjoyed great success in the tournament. She has struggled with injuries in recent years and might be found at slightly longer odds than you would expect, while there could be value in backing an outsider as there have been some surprise packages reaching the final in recent years, including Li Na and Dinara Safina.
