The French Open is reaching the business end of proceedings and Britain's Andy Murray will attempt to reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the first time in his career. Murray battled into the quarter-finals with a five set win over Viktor Troicki on Tuesday and he is hot favourite in the betting with Bet 365 to beat Juan Ignacio Chela in the last eight on Wednesday.
Murray overcame Troicki 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in a match that had to be completed on Tuesday afternoon and it was a remarkable comeback from the Brit as he had been a break down in the fifth set. The win means he has equalled his career best performance at Roland Garros of 2009 when he reached the last eight, although concern over his ankle injury continues to plague him.
He picked up the injury in his third round win at the weekend and if it is still hindering him then it could be worth a look at him being taken the distance by Chela this week.
Bet 365 make Murray 1/7 favourite for his match with the Argentine clay court specialist, although Chela is available at an industry best price of 9/2 in the betting. Chela too has equalled his best performance at Roland Garros as he made the quarter-finals in 2004 and if he did take Murray all the way to five sets then the 3-2 Murray win could prove tempting at 6/1.
Meanwhile, Chela has never gone beyond the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam and in seven meetings with Murray the pair have never gone beyond three sets - with Murray winning six matches in comparison to Chela's one, so it is perhaps no surprise that the 3-0 Murray win is currently 5/6 on.
If Murray does overcome Chela, a semi-final meeting with defending champion Rafael Nadal is likely, although if he did make the final then his current price of 12/1 to win the tournament outright with Bet365.com would undoubtedly tumble.
Nadal is bidding to win a record sixth French Open title and faces Robin Soderling in the quarter-finals. The Spaniard is 3/10 on to win the match, while Soderling can be backed at 5/2, although Nadal has been eased out slightly in the outright tournament winner betting.
The clay court star is now 2/1 to claim the title after battling through his matches so far and it is a sign of how far Novak Djokovic has come that he is now 8/11 favourite as he looks to extend his 43 match winning run after receiving a walkover into the semi-finals when Fabio Fognini withdrew.
