French Open Tennis Betting Has Murray the odds on favourite v Baghdatis

Andy Murray completed his rain delayed second round match at Roland Garros on Thursday to beat Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela in four sets and set up a third round tie with Marcos Baghdatis on Friday. Clay is Murray's least favourite of the playing surfaces but after coming back from two sets down to beat home favourite Richard Gasquet and yesterday's win over Chela it's good enough for bookmaker Victor Chandler to make the Scot their 1/3 odds on favourite to progress to the last sixteen.

Cypriot Baghdatis is seeded 25 for the French Open and has dropped just the one set in his first two matches, seeing of American Jesse Witten in round one and then Spaniard Marcel Granollers in four sets. The current World number 30 has been as high as 12 in the rankings but dropped as low as 100 during 2008. The talented Cypriot has struggled in this season's ATP World Tour events on clay but did reach the semi-final in Munich at the start of the month. Baghdatis has only reached the fourth round once in Paris and that was back in 2007, but he is a dangerous opponent when on song as Murray can testify, having lost both matches they have played in the past. Victor Chandler have odds of 9/4 that Baghdatis makes it three wins in a row versus Andy Murray.

Murray has been struggling with a knee injury and he will be keen for this match not to go the full distance. There is a possibility that they won't get this game finished on Friday, due to the rain relays on Wednesday and Thursday, this match is scheduled to be fourth on the Suzanne Lenglen court later this afternoon. Murray is 33/1 to win the title in Paris with Victorchandler, but that looks unlikely with a number of clay court specialists in the field, not to mention Rafael Nadal, who is the 4/11 favourite to win his fifth Roland Garros title. The draw is such that the winner of the Murray/Baghdatis match will play either John Isner of the USA or the Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych in the last sixteen. For those fantasists that can see Murray getting further, he could meet current champion and World number one Roger Federer in the semi-finals. Federer is second favourite for the championship at odds of 3/1.
