Number three seed Novak Djokovic has been made the favourite to win the Australian Open Men’s Singles Tennis final in Melbourne this coming Sunday against Britain’s Andy Murray. Most Bookmakers quote him at around the 4/6 odds on mark but a best price of 8/11 can still be obtained from Paddy Power who list Murray as an 11/10 chance.
Djokovic won this title back in 2008, defeating Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final, while Murray made the final here last year but lost to four time champion, Roger Federer in straight sets.
The two men are great friends off the court both will be 24 years old in May and have been on the circuit for roughly the same amount of time, but have never before opposed each other in a Grand Slam Final. In fact in their head to head encounters they have met seven times, with Djokovic holding a 4-3 advantage.
However it is Murray who has the edge on recent meetings and meetings played on a hard court surface. The Scot has won their last three encounters, with two of them coming in Masters 1000 finals. The last match they played each other came in the ATP World Tour Finals in 2009, which Murray won 6-2, 7-5 and before that they met in the Masters 1000 Final in Miami in 2008, which Murray also won in two straight sets, a similar score was also recorded when he beat Djokovic in the 2008 Masters 1000 in Canada; these victories strongly suggest that Murray has every chance to win his first Grand Slam and must give him plenty of confidence. A Murray straight set win in this final can be backed with very tempting odds of 6/1 available from PaddyPower
Djokovic has played brilliantly in the latter stages of this tournament, his straight sets victory over Federer in the semi final was sublime, it was played at a seriously high standard which proved that the ‘Serb’ is in the form of his life and has improved since his defeat to Rafael Nadal in the US Open Final last September.
They both play a similar game from the back of the court, with Djokovic preferring to play off the pace of his opponent and using his renowned accuracy to score points, while Murray likes to move his opponent from side to side and rely on his exceptional range of shot making for winners. There is little to choose between their serves, both can serve big when necessary, but Murray does tend to make more double faults
The key to who wins may come in the length of the match, Djokovic who has had an extra day to recover from his semi final, has been known to tire in long matches and is prone to injury and losses in concentration. By contrast, Murray tends to get stronger as matches lengthen and although he has played no five set matches in this tournament, he will undoubtedly be prepared to go the full distance.
