Andy Murray has been handed a golden opportunity to get to the latter stages of the US Open Tennis Championship in Flushing Meadows by a very benign draw which should see him safely through to the Quarter Final stages at least. As a result his odds of winning his first Grand Slam were cut from 3/1 to 11/4 with Bet365 and he is now joint second favourite with world number one, Rafael Nadal.
Favourite for the title with odds of 9/4 is Roger Federer, winner here five times and who finished Runner Up in 2009 to Juan Martin Del Potro, who is not defending his crown due to an injured wrist. The three are well clear in the betting, with the next best being world number three, Novak Djokovic with odds of 11/1.

Federer, who is seeking an incredible 17th Grand Slam has what appears to be a fairly tough draw, where he is likely to meet Marin Cilic in the fourth round, Robin Soderling, who beat him at the same stage at the French Open in May, in the Quarter Final and Novak Djokovic in the Semi Final. He might also have to meet Lleyton Hewitt in the third round, a man who already has a victory over ‘the Fed’ this year. It is also worth pointing out that Federer has been eliminated in the quarter finals of the last two Grand Slam events.

Number One seed Nadal, has yet to make a final at Flushing Meadow, the best he has achieved so far is two Semi Finals in 2007 and 2008. His failures at Flushing Meadow are widely believed to be due to the speed of the hardcourts. Nadal’s game always suits slower courts or grass which is why, that should he play Murray in their expected Semi Final, Murray might just have the edge. The Scot beat him at the Semi Final stage in 2008, before losing in the final to Federer and also beat Nadal at the recent Toronto Masters, before going on to record another win over Federer in the final. Murray’s toughest match may well come in the quarter Final where he is seeded to meet, Thomas Berdych, Runner Up to Nadal at Wimbledon in July and who has improved out of all proportion this season. He also holds a 2-1 head to head lead over Murray in their three encounters to date.
