Britain's Andy Murray has been clipped in to win the French Open outright in the latest betting with William Hill bookmakers after he battled into the third round at Roland Garros. Murray had been a 16/1 chance but has shortened slightly to 14/1 in the betting ahead of his match with Germany's Michael Berrer on Saturday, although reigning champion Rafael Nadal remains the 11/10 favourite to claim yet another title at Roland Garros.
Murray overcame Simon Bolelli in the second round in difficult conditions on Thursday as he secured a 7-6, 6-4, 7-5 win in blustery conditions. He will next face Berrer, who has gone beyond the first round of Roland Garros for the first time in his career.
Berrer did beat home favourite and clay court veteran Arnaud Clement in the last round though and the world number 95 is not to be underestimated, even though he starts the match as a big outsider at 10/1 in the betting with Hills.
Murray goes in as a huge 1/33 on favourite for the match, although if conditions remain windy it could be another battle for the British number one. He is 1/4 on to win the match 3-0, but of more value could be the 3-1 at 4/1 as Berrer is likely to play with freedom as he will have nothing to lose against his more illustrious opponent. Meanwhile, WilliamHill.com offer a very tempting industry best of 16/5 for the match to involve a total of four sets.
Assuming Murray does come through this third round clash he looks to have his best chance of equalling or even bettering his best French Open performance of quarter-finalist in 2009. Hills offer a market on Murray's stage of elimination from the tournament and he is 7/1 to crash out in the fourth round where he would face either Alexandr Dolgopolov or Viktor Troicki.
Looking further ahead, his likely quarter-final opponent would be clay court expert Juan Ignacio Chela and Hills go 6/1 that he leaves Roland Garros at this stage. Although lying in wait in the semi-finals could well be defending champion and tournament favourite Rafael Nadal, and unsurprisingly Murray is 8/11 on to lose out in the last four.
A relatively kind draw has certainly opened up the opportunity for Murray to go far in this tournament and if he continues to win his matches in straight sets that 14/1 for him to win the tournament and his first ever Grand Slam is likely to continue to shorten.
