The2012 Australian Openwill be played between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal on Sunday in Melbourne following the top seed Djokovic's semi-final win over Andy Murray on Friday. Bookmaker Bet365 makes Djokovic their odds on favourite to go on and lift the title for the second consecutive year and make it four wins out of the last five Grand Slams in the process. Nadal has had an extra day to recover from his semi-final win when he came from a set down to beat number three seed Roger Federer on Thursday night.
World number one Novak Djokovic had cruised through to the semi-final stage as he looks for a repeat of his win here twelve months ago. The Serb won three of the four majors last season and is once again odds on to win Sunday's final. Bet 365make Djokovic there 4/6 favourite to beat Nadal. The Serbian beat Paulo Lorenzi, Santiago Giraldo, Nicolas Mahut, Lleyton Hewitt and David Ferrer on his way to the semi-finals. Andy Murray then gave Djokovic a massive scare and took the world number one to five sets in a gruelling five hour match. The character shown by Djokovic is what makes him world number one but it is a big ask to get himself prepared physically for Sunday's final having had 24 hours less rest than his opponent.
Nadal was in excellent form at the beginning of the Aussie Open beating Alex Kuznetsov, Tommy Haas and Lukas Lacko in straight sets in the first three rounds. Fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez was also beaten in straight sets by Nadal in the last sixteen before he then came through a gruelling four set quarter final with Tomas Berdych on Tuesday night. Nadal then went into his semi-final with Roger Federer as underdog with the bookmakers feeling the Berdych match would have taken too much out of him. Despite losing the first set Nadal went on to win the match with Federer 3-1 and despite this and the extra days rest, it looks as though bookmaker Bet365 are willing to lay him for the final going best price 13/10.
The finalists have met each other 29 times on the ATP tour with Nadal having the edge with sixteen wins to Djokovic's thirteen. However, the world number one has won the last six meetings straight, including the finals of the US Open and Wimbledon. Djokovic also beat Nadal twice last season on the Spaniard's favourite surface clay on his way to usurping him in the world rankings. Friday's energy sapping semi-final with Andy Murray however might take some recovering from however and despite a 3-1 win in the favour of Djokovic is favourite in the set betting withBet365, the reverse scoreline in the favour of Nadal makes appeal at 9/2.
