The Australian Open women's final will see ante-post tournament favourite Kim Clijsters take on Li Na in Melbourne on Saturday morning. Both players safely negotiated their way through the tournament while other top seeds fell by the way side and it is Clijsters who is favourite to win the match with Victor Chandler. The Belgian is odds on at 3/10, while Chinese star Na can be backed at odds of 5/2 for what should be an intriguing finale.
Clijsters comfortably overcame Vera Zvonareva in her semi-final on Thursday morning as she won through 6-3, 6-3. The three time and current US Open Champion's win means she will now go to number two in the world rankings ahead of Zvonareva. It is a remarkable effort from the Belgian star who retired in 2007 before making her comeback to tennis in August 2009 and this will be her second Grand Slam final since her return to the sport.
She lost out to fellow Belgian Justine Henin, who retired this week, in the Australian Open final in 2004 and it is a tournament she will be keen to win after never emerging victorious in Melbourne. In the set betting, the 2-0 win to Clijsters is 3/4 favourite as she looks to justify her pre-tournament favouritism with bookmakers. Despite being hot favourite according to the odds with VictorChandler.com, she faces a very tricky task against Li Na. The Chinese player stunned Clijsters earlier this month in the final of the Sydney International as Clijsters took a 5-0 lead in the first set before Na came back to pull off a stunning 7-6, 6-3 straight sets win.
Na will no doubt be boosted by that victory and a repeat of her straight sets win on Saturday is currently the at odds of 5/1 with VCBet. Meanwhile, she has made history in reaching Saturday's final as she became the first Chinese player to reach a Grand Slam singles final. So often players are overawed by the prospect of a major final but Na has been in imperious form so far and she defeated the current world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-finals on Thursday. She came back from the brink of defeat as she won 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to stretch her unbeaten record in all tournaments to a brilliant eleven matches.
Only one of the last five women's Australian Open finals has gone the distance of the full three sets, although this looks to be a close match and a three setter this Saturday is tempting at industry best priced odds of 9/4 with Victor Chandler. Li Na reached the semi-finals last year and will be keen to be the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam tournament, while Clijsters is bidding for her first Australian Open title. It all looks set to be a classic end to what has been an up and down tournament so far.
