Venus To Take Serena The Distance In The Australian Open Final

Age is just a number as far as this year's Australian Open is concerned as Saturday's ladies' final sees two of the greats of the sport go head-to-head on Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, with Serena and Venus Williams set to take centre stage...

  • Serena boasts a 16-11 winning record in head-to-head meetings with Venus
  • Venus is making her first appearance in a Grand Slam final since Wimbledon 2009
  • Serena has won the Australian Open six times previously

The Story So Far

The revival and longevity of both of these players is nothing short of remarkable as Serena has fought back from serious injury to consolidate her position as the greatest of all time, while Venus herself has recovered from illness to reach a first slam final since 2009 - when she lost to Serena in the Wimbledon finale.

Venus hasn't won a major title since Wimbledon 2008 and she is 4/1 to win the Australian Open title for the first time this weekend (Bet Victor).

Unfortunately, the 36-year-old wasn't able to win the Melbourne crown when in her pomp so it is difficult to see her doing it when appearing as the oldest ever female finalist at the Australian Open, particularly against her 35-year-old sister.

Head-To-Head

However, we are backing Venus to take Serena the distance and the match is 12/5 to last three sets (Betway). Serena has yet to drop a set in this tournament but she has never won the Australian title without dropping a set before and all of the pressure is on the six-time champion, who might be sidetracked by sentimentality against her older sister.

The 22-time major winner has often admitted to hoping for the best for her sister, as you would expect, and the size of the occasion when bidding for an open-era record 23rd major win might get to her.

Serena boasts a 16-11 record in head-to-head clashes with Venus though and has won four of the last five, with their most recent meeting at the 2015 US Open going the distance in terms of sets.

Venus has dropped just the one set herself en route to this final and has nothing to lose in what will be her first Australian Open final since finishing runner-up to Serena in 2003. They have never met in Melbourne since then, with Venus failing to go past the quarter-finals in eleven attempts before this year's event, but it promises to be a cracker on Saturday and it is Serena who is 10/3 to come out on top with a 2-1 win (Paddy Power).
