It may surprise many to realise that Andy Murray is odds on favourite to defeat reigning champion Rafa Nadal in the Australian Open Tennis quarter final this week. The two men come together with both showing outstanding form and in the full knowledge that they both have a great chance to win the opening Grand Slam of 2010. Murray is currently 3/4 and Nadal Even Money with bookmakers Paddy Power to win the match, but punters should look for better value in the set betting, where both players are 9/2 to win the match in five sets.
So far in the tournament, Nadal has dropped just two sets in four matches played, while Murray, who has had probably a slightly easier draw up until this stage, has yet to drop a set in any of his matches.
The two players have met three times in Grand Slams in the past, the first encounter being here in the 4th round at the Australian Open in 2007, which Nadal won in five tough sets. Nadal also beat Murray in the Wimbledon quarter finals of 2008, before going on to win the title. However, Murray gained significant revenge a few weeks later, at the 2008 US Open where he knocked Nadal out at the semi final stage, before going on to lose to Roger Federer in the final. We say it was significant because it was played on a hard court, which is Murrays favoured surface and one where he should have the upper hand over the Spaniard.

It has to be said that Nadal, who had a very long injury lay off in 2009 looks to be back at his mercurial best and will be ready to battle Murray in what should be a classic baseline encounter. To win, Murray is going to have to do an awful lot of running, but a running game often brings out the best in the Scot where he has proven against Nadal before that he can produce some of the most stunning passing shots in tennis anywhere.
Like the bookmakers we think that is almost too close to call, but if Murray’s first serve is working as it should be, then we think he can edge it over five sets, however if it’s not, then Nadal may have him at his mercy and could win as he likes.. For us this is definately the type of match to follow in-running and make bets as when seen fit we suggest therefore that tennis punters follow the superb live betting markets run by Irish Bookmaker, Paddy Power.
