Despite never reaching the men’s singles final at the US Open Tennis Championship, world number one, Rafael Nadal, has been seeded number one for the tournament this year. The number two spot goes to his nemesis, Roger Federer, who has won the event five times and was runner up last year to Juan Martin Del Potro. The two best players in the world are also the top two in the betting with most Bookmakers finding it hard to separate them. Paddy Power however go 9/4 Federer and offer a best price on Nadal of 10/3.
Absent through injury last season, Nadal had made the Semi Finals in both 2008 and 2007, but he has yet to go any further, making it the only Grand Slam event he has never won or been in the final of. The reasons are many but the favoured one is that Nadal struggles against the top players on the fast hard courts of Flushing Meadows, which do not allow him to dictate the rallies from the back of the court. He is therefore more than a reasonable bet at around 7/4 to be eliminated at the Semi Final stage again and Federer looks like the perfect betting‘jolly’.
2010 US Open Men’s Singles Odds Comparison.
Britain’s Andy Murray, a finalist here in 2008, where he beat Nadal in the Semi Final but lost to Federer in a one sided Final, has been given the fourth seeding, which should see him through to another semi final at least. Murray comes to the tournament in good form after winning the ATP 1000 Toronto Masters a couple of weeks ago. His confidence must be at a season’s high too as he beat both Nadal and Federer to win the Title. Murray is third favourite to win this year with odds of 3/1 available from PaddyPower.
The Bookmakers clearly believe that the winner will come from the top three seeds, but this was not the case last season when the title went to the then number five seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, who is unavailable to defend his title this year due to a persistent wrist injury. Of the rest, then respect must be given to the third seed, Novak Djokovic, who was runner up here to Federer in 2007, and who has won a Grand Slam (The 2008 Australian Open) on a hard court surface. Djokovic is a 14/1 shot while players such as number five seed, Robin Soderling a two time Grand Slam finalist, is at 25/1, for which the same price has been given to the seventh seed Tomas Berdych, runner up to Nadal in the Wimbledon Final in June.
