Odds Suggest Andy Murray Can Win The Australian Open

The first Grand Slam of the year is well underway and all the focus in the UK is of course on the progress of Andy Murray who has been threatening to win a Major for a couple of years now. The World No.5 has a difficult draw in Melbourne but is confident of going all the way. His best performance so far in a 'Slam' was at the US Open in 2008 when he went all the way to the final, eventually losing to Roger Federer. The Scot will be looking for something similar in Australia, although he does not have a great record down under. His best performance so far at the Australian Open was a fourth round appearance last year when he lost to Fernando Verdasco. Murray has already made it through the early rounds and a showdown with Rafa Nadal is on the horizon in the quarter-finals and that could be the key encounter.

Latest Australian Open Tennis 2010 Odds

Murray is already one of the favourites for the tournament and can currently be backed at around 4/1 with Boylesports. Those odds look slightly skinny at this stage with potential clashes with Nadal and Del Potro ahead of him just to make the final. However, the Scot is more than capable of beating those players if on top form and punters should be advised that those odds will be slashed with every match that he wins.

The World No.1 Roger Federer is still the man to beat of course and he is in the other half of the draw to Andy Murray. The Fed-Express will be hoping to add another trophy to the cabinet and can be backed at 5/2 with Paddy Power to take the win. Federer is a three-time Australian Open champion and is more than at home down under which means he is very difficult to beat. The defending champion is Rafa Nadal who is looking to regain top form after struggling through the second half of last year. The Spaniard is the toughest competitor on tour and can never be ruled out and as such is priced at 10/3 with Boylesports. Those odds may well be great value for Nadal backers but the key match-up could be his potential clash with Andy Murray in the quarter-finals. The winner of that match will be in great shape to go all the way to the final meaning those odds could be good value.
