The ATP Tour Finals get underway on Sunday at the O2 in London. It’s the most prestigious tournament outside of the four Grand Slams and the world’s top eight players will battle it out for the final big prize of the year. It’s a unique format as the eight men are split into two groups for a round-robin set of matches before the top two from each group progress into the semi-finals.
The defending champion is Roger Federer and he, along with Andy Murray, could be the players to watch at this tournament. Federer, currently the 15/8 favourite in the betting with Stan James, is coming here off the back of wins in Basel and at the Paris Masters, while the longest unbeaten run of Murray’s career has just come to an end. Fatigue probably played a part in Murray’s loss to Tomas Berdych in Paris and if Murray is fresh for London then he certainly should challenge. StanJames.com currently has Andy Murray available at 12/5 to win the ATP Tour Finals.
Novak Djokovic has enjoyed one of the all-time great year’s in the history of men’s tennis. He has won three Grand Slams and had an unbelievable unbeaten run at the start of the year. Unfortunately injuries have plagued him since his US Open win and most recently he was forced to withdraw from the Paris Masters. With such shaky preparation, it will take something remarkable to win a high-calibre tournament. Djokovic is 9/2 to win the ATP Tour finals, a price that would have sounded huge a few months ago.
The same can be said of Rafael Nadal who StanJames.com are offering at 5/1 for the tournament. The Spaniard has admitted that his confidence has taken a hit after coming up short against Djokovic so many times earlier this year. He has been on the end of some shock defeats to much lower-ranked players but it would be dangerous to completely write-off the ten-time Grand Slam winner.
It’s hard to see the winner coming from outside the top four players but of the other four men in the field, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga or Tomas Berdych has the best chance. Both men have proved they can beat the top players this year and Tsonga especially produces his best tennis on the biggest stages. The problem for these two, as well as David Ferrer and Mardy Fish who complete the draw, is that while in any given match they can produce stunning tennis, consistency is a problem.
For instance, at Wimbledon this year Tsonga, who is 12/1 to win the ATP Tour Finals at StanJames.com, became the first man to beat Roger Federer after being two sets down in an unforgettable display. However he couldn’t reproduce it in the semi-final and lost in four sets to Djokovic. To win this title any one of the outsiders will have to most likely beat three of the top four players in a short space of time, something that looks out of their reach at this point in time.
15/8 Roger Federer
12/5 Andrew Murray
9/2 Novak Djokovic
5/1 Rafael Nadal
12/1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
20/1 Tomas Berdych
33/1 David Ferrer
50/1 Mardy Fish
StanJames.com has several other betting markets available, including betting on who will qualify from and win each group, as well as betting on the opening matches.
