With the absence of Kim Clijsters and the lack of preparation time for the Williams sister’s the betting for the Ladies Singles title at Wimbledon this year has become a far more open affair. Narrow market leader currently is the world ranked number six and 2004 champion, Maria Sharapova who has odds of 4/1 available from Paddy Power who also go 9/2 about defending champion, Serena Williams and 7/1 about Li Na from China, recent winner of the French Open at Roland Garros.
Sharapova has been slowly but surely getting back to her best this year making the latter stages of most tournaments entered and winning on clay in Rome last month. Whether or not she is a worthy favourite to win a second Wimbledon is very much open to doubt, particularly as she will have a very difficult time of things should she get to the quarter finals or beyond, where she will be meeting players who she has struggled to beat over the last couple of years.
One of those players is Russian Vera Zvonareva a finalist here 12 months ago and who also reached the final of the US Open last September. She has warmed up for Wimbledon by reaching the quarter finals at Eastbourne this week, where she defeated Serena Williams in the last 16, before going out at the hands of Australian, Sam Stosur in the quarter finals. Zvonareva will be well prepared for Wimbledon this year and is an excellent grass court player who has outstanding odds of 14/1 to win a first Grand Slam title.
Of course it is only a naive punter who would dismiss the chances of Serena Williams winning the title for a fifth time. However the big hitting American has been off court with a lung illness for nearly 12 months and is well off the pace as she showed in defeat against Zvonareva the other day. Nonetheless, she did take the Russian to three sets and will get stronger with each match played at Wimbledon and being the champion that she is could well justify the 9/2 against her winning on offer from Paddy Power.
Sister, Venus Williams should also not be dismissed although she does appear to be well past her best these days and will need plenty of good fortune if she is to get into the latter stages of the tournament. She did reach the quarter finals at Eastbourne last week, her first tournament since January but looked in dire need of both practice and fitness, factors that will surely rule her out of a sixth Wimbledon crown this year.
Much of the smart money is being laid on the shoulders of China’s Li Na, winner, of the French Open at Roland Garros last week. That win, her first ‘Grand Slam’ took her to the number four spot in the world rankings and she comes to Wimbledon looking for back to back Grand Slam success’s and in the form of her life and with ‘bags’ of confidence. She has reached the last eight here for the last two years and looks as good a bet as any to win with odds of 7/1 on offer by paddy power.
Carline Wozniacki who is the number one seed as well as the current world ranked number one has only a modest record at Wimbledon having never reached the last eight in five previous attempts. Obviously she is not world number one without a reason, she has won 17 career titles on the Ladies tour, but she is fast earning herself a reputation as a poor ‘Grand Slam’ player who fails to rise to the occasion. This reputation is borne out when it is realised that she has only ever reached one ‘Grand Slam’ final in her career to date.
Another player who is thought to be in with big chances this year is Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic, a semi finalist here last year and who has shot up the rankings to number eight. She has an excellent grass court game and is capable at her best of beating anyone. Sometimes confidence is a problem for her but should she overcome the ‘nerves’ a big tournament is most definately ‘on the cards’. Kvitova can be backed currently with odds of 9/1.
4/1 Maria Sharapova
9/2 Serena Williams
6/1 Venus Williams
7/1 Li Na
9/1 Petra Kvitova
10/1 Caroline Wozniacki
12/1 Victoria Azarenka
14/1 Vera Zvonareva
25/1 Sam Stosur
25/1 Daniela Hantuchova
40/1 Marion Bartoli
40/1 Sabine Lisicki
50/1 BAR
