A Chance For Outsiders To Shine

The reigning champion Marin Cilic and the man he beat in the final twelve months ago, Andy Murray, are both absent this week, while Kei Nishikori has withdrawn from the action at the Lindner Family Tennis Centre.

Furthermore, there are doubts surrounding two of the leading players as seven-time champion Roger Federer may yet withdraw as he has a back injury and he surely wouldn't want to risk missing the US Open in a couple of weeks' time.

Federer is currently a 2/1 favourite (Paddy Power) but he is in the same quarter of the draw as Juan Martin Del Potro, Grigor Dimitrov and Tomas Berdych, while Alex Zverev is a likely semi-final opponent.

Zverev beat Federer in the Montreal final on Sunday and the young German is bidding to win a third title in three weeks which is a big ask. Zverev is in a tricky section of the draw that could yield a potential third round clash with John Isner and a possible quarter-final with Milos Raonic.

The fast surface should suit someone like Raonic but he has endured a terrible year with injury and poor form, so we prefer to back the 2013 runner-up Isner, who continues to impress. The American's return game leaves plenty to be desired but his serve remains an immense weapon and he has already booked his place in the second round thanks to a straight sets win over Viktor Troicki.

Isner can be backed at a tempting 33/1 with Betfred.

Querrey Is In Form

Rafael Nadal is in a slightly easier top-half of the draw and could become world number one if he wins the title in Cincinnati. That is a big 'if' though as the 2013 champion showed his vulnerability on hard courts when losing to Denis Shapovalov in Montreal last week and he could meet one of Nick Kyrgios, Kevin Anderson, Ivo Karlovic or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the last-eight.

It is in the second quarter of the top-half of the draw where we think some value could lie though as Sam Querrey is in a relatively easy section. The world number 20 has been in great touch of late as he reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon before winning a second title of the year in Mexico.

The 29-year-old ran out of steam in Canada last week but he should benefit from a few days rest and a man who has gone 16-6 on hard courts this year is well worth a small each-way wager at 50/1 with William Hill.
