Andy Murray is an odds on favourite to defeat Frenchman and number eight seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final of the Aegon Championship at the Queen’s Club on Sunday. The Scot, who is seeded number two for the tournament is a best price of 1/3 with Paddy Power while Tsonga has odds of around the 2/1 mark.
2009 winner, Murray reached the final after producing a master class of tennis against four time Queen’s winner, Andy Roddick. His 6-3, 6-1 victory in just an hour of play spoke volumes as to the ruthless form Murray found himself in; should he maintain that level in the final then the Frenchman might as well not bother to show up.
Tsonga, who had put out the number one seed and ten time ‘Grand Slam’ winner, Rafael Nadal in the quarter final, did not have things all his own way against the British number two and world ranked number 216, James Ward in the semi final. He came through in the end in straight sets but had to come back from a break of serve down in the second set to eventually force a tie-break, which he won by 9-7 after surviving a set point.
Murray, who is ranked fourth in the world and Tsonga, ranked nineteenth, have met five times on tour in the past, with Murray winning four, including in the Quarter Final at Wimbledon last year which Murray won in four sets; this was the only time they have played each on grass. Murray also defeated Tsonga in straight sets in the Quarter Final of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai last year.
Certainly form and the statistics favour the Scot of securing a second Queen’s title. His performance against Roddick was exceptional, particularly with his ability to nullify the big serve of the American. There is probably not a better returner in the world than Murray which is why Tsonga will have to play with plenty of service variation and a high first service percentage if he wants to succeed. The betting however suggests that Murray will win this match in two sets for which he is 10/11 odds on favourite with paddy power to do.
