The first one of nine annual ATP 1000 Masters events gets underway this week at Indian Wells with world number one, Roger Federer heading the betting with odds of 9/4 offered by Bet365.
Federer comes to the tournament after an extended break after winning the Australian Open in January, proving in Melbourne that he is still the best male player on the planet. However, his form in the Masters Series over recent years has not been at the same standard as it was a few years ago, when he was keen in those days to win everything he could. It is fair to say that nowadays he does not play with the same passion as he does in the Grand Slams and that is why we think he is not always a good bet to win the lower grade tournaments. This event is a case in point; he was champion here in 2004, 2005 and 2006, but has not reached the final since.

Reigning champion is Rafael Nadal, who easily beat Britain’s Andy Murray in the final last year. However, this is Nadal’s first tournament since he pulled out of the Australian Open with injury, sustained when losing to Murray in the Quarter Final and it might be too soon to back him, even with his current odds of 5/1, as the likely winner this week.
It is Murray in fact who is second favourite in the betting, the world number 4 is rated as a 7/2 chance with Bet365 to win his fifth Masters title to add to the two he won in 2008 and the two he won in 2009. He certainly has the game and desire to do so.
World number 2, Novak Djokovic, fresh from his heroics in the Davis Cup last week, when Serbia dumped the USA out of the tournament, is another who will be well backed to win this. He won this tournament in 2008 and has already won the ATP World Tour Title in Dubai this year, when he beat Mikhail Youzhny in the final. If anything Djokovic may have already played too much tennis this year so far and with his history of pulling out of tournaments a bet on him, we think, would be unsafe this time.
Instead we think a lesser known player may be worth backing to make a breakthrough in the Masters and would suggest that world number 9, Marin Cilic, already a two time winner this year and who has only been beaten twice in 20 singles matches could well be worth an each way nibble with odds of 14/1, also offered by Bet365
