There are few surprises in the seedings for this year's Australian Open and it is defending champion Novak Djokovic who heads the seeds and the latest betting. Djokovic enjoyed a stunning 2011 season and is an industry best priced 11/8 favourite with Ladbrokes ahead of the opening day of the tournament in Melbourne on Monday.
Djokovic soared to the top of the world rankings last year as he won three of the four Grand Slam titles on offer. He bypassed Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer on his way to winning the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open, while Andy Murray will be bidding to avenge his straight sets defeat in the final of this tournament last year.
Murray, Australian Open runner-up for the past two years, has been seeded number four and he enjoyed the perfect preparation for Melbourne. Despite struggling in the early rounds, Murray won the Brisbane Open in fine style last week as he beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-3 in the final. The British number one will face some sterner tests in Melbourne as he continues his search for a first major win, although his partnership with new coach Ivan Lendl looks to have enjoyed a perfect start.
Ladbrokes price Murray as the third favourite to win the tournament at 9/2 in the betting, with number three seed Roger Federer just ahead of him at 7/2. The four-time champion beat Murray in straight sets in 2010 but was forced to withdraw from the Qatar Open with a back injury last week and that will be a huge concern.
Rafa Nadal endured a tough time in Qatar as well as he was dumped out in the semi-finals by Gael Monfils. The 2009 Australian Open winner has struggled at this tournament in the past and despite being the number two seed this year he is as long as 6/1 to win the event for a second time. It is not often you will find such a big price on Nadal and could the bookmakers be writing him off a little too early?
The top four seeds appear to be something of a closed shop nowadays but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga looks to have the ability to break in. The number six seed won the Qatar Open last week as he beat Monfils 7-5, 6-3 in the final and he could be worth a look at 16/1 in the betting with Ladbrokes.com. Tsonga reached the final of this tournament in 2010 and consistently reaches the latter stages of tournaments, with that first major win still eluding the eight time ATP Tour winner.
Juan Martin Del Potro will also be keen to break into the top four after a couple of injury plagued years. The former US Open winner is seeded eleven but has never been past the quarter-finals here and is priced 14/1.
There are then some big priced hopefuls in the betting as David Ferrer, the number five seed and a semi-finalist last year, is available at 50/1, while 2010 Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych is available at 40/1.
Elsewhere, Andy Roddick endured a tough 2011 season but he did reach the quarter-finals of the US Open and if the number 15 seed can rediscover some consistency his big serve will be a threat in Melbourne. The number 15 seed is a four-time semi-finalist here and could provide interest to each-way backers at 125/1.
