The world's top players are gathering in California for the Indian Wells Masters and an exciting week of tennis lies ahead. The top 31 seeds have got a bye through to the second round so won't be in action until Saturday and it is world number one Rafael Nadal who is tournament favourite at 5/2 in the ante-post betting with Victor Chandler, but in form Novak Djokovic looks a dangerous proposition and we fancy he could go all the way yet again.
Djokovic was masterful in winning the Australian Open in January and he has maintained that form with a stunning unbeaten record in 2011 - winning twelve and losing none. He destroyed Andy Murray in the final in Melbourne and also disposed of Federer in the semis, and he followed that up with victory over Federer in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships in February. He could take Federer's place as world number two depending on their respective performances this week and at 3/1 in the betting with VCBet he could be well worth backing.
The Serb and 2008 Indian Wells winner is unlikely to have things all his own way at the first Masters 1000 event of the season though as he faces a tricky draw that includes 25/1 punt Andy Roddick early on. Roddick is on a seven match winning run after winning in Memphis recently and was a finalist here in 2010, but Djokovic is very much the man to beat this week.
Federer needs to improve on recent performances, particularly against Djokovic, and it is a sign of the changing times that he is only third favourite. VC Bet offer the three time Indian Wells winner at 7/2 in the betting even though he has crashed out in the last two seasons with defeats to Marcos Baghdatis and Mardy Fish.
Two time champion Rafael Nadal meanwhile looks well set to make the last four in the competition for the seventh consecutive year following a favourable draw, although he is in the same side of the draw as the mercurial and dangerous Baghdatis, who could be worth a look as an outside150/1 punt.
Last year saw a surprise winner as the unfancied Ivan Ljubicic claimed his first ATP Tour Masters event, but he failed to kick on from there in 2010 and is once again a big outsider at 125/1 this year. Ljubicic could face 14/1 shot and 2009 US Open winner Juan Martin Del Potro in the second round, and Del Potro is another that could challenge this week if he has sufficiently recovered from the injury problems that have seen him drop to number 90 in the world.
Britain's Andy Murray is available at 17/2 in the betting with VictorChandler.com as he returns to action for the first time since his humiliating first round defeat to Baghdatis in Rotterdam and he looks to recover from another Australian Open defeat. He has a disappointing record here, despite finishing runner up in 2009, and is in the same section of the draw as number four seed Robin Soderling.
Swede Soderling is in formidable form this year with eighteen wins from nineteen matches, including three titles, and at 14/1 in the betting to win the Indian Wells masters he is well worth a look in the betting behind Djokovic.
