The tennis season continues on the hard courts of Montreal this week as the top players gather for the Montreal Masters, or Rogers Cup as it is also known, at the Uniprix Stadium in Canada. The usual suspects are at the head of the odds and it is world number one Novak Djokovic who is Stan James' 6/4 favourite to win the title, although two-time defending champion Andy Murray could be worth a look.
Djokovic of course supplanted Rafael Nadal as the world number one following his stunning win at Wimbledon. The Serb has been in stellar form all year, losing just one match on the tour, and he has taken his game to another level. The 2007 Montreal champion hasn't enjoyed a great deal of success in Canada in recent years though and faces a tough draw this week.
Stan James offer 9/4 that all four top seeds (Djokovic, Nadal, Murray and Roger Federer) make the semi-finals this week but Djokovic in particular faces a tough task. He is in the same quarter as Juan Martin Del Potro, who looked back to his best and fully fit at Wimbledon, and the Argentine is a dangerous proposition on his favourite hard court surface.
The 2009 US Open champion was a beaten finalist in 2009 and he looks the best of the rest outside of the top four seeds at odds of 14/1. Also, in Djokovic's quarter of the draw is the enigmatic Frenchman Gael Monfils and if he fires he could provide great value at industry best priced odds of 50/1.
With such a tough draw and at such a short price of 6/4, Djokovic looks a difficult man to back, even on current form, and it could prove wise to look elsewhere this week.
Rafael Nadal is the next best in the odds at 11/4 and the Spaniard is a two-time winner after his successes in 2005 and 2008. The Wimbledon runner-up has been handed a very kind draw, with number seven seed Tomas Berdych the highest seed in his quarter, and he should make the semi-finals at least.
In contrast, Roger Federer looks to face a tough task and Stan James have priced him 5/1 to win the title he won in 2004 and 2006. The biggest obstacle in front of Federer looks to be Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who of course produced a stunning turnaround from two-nil down to beat Federer in five sets at Wimbledon.
Tsonga has previous form of defeating Federer after he came back from 5-1 down in Canada to beat Federer in 2009 and at 50/1 he looks worthy of each-way consideration.
If you're looking for an outright winner though, Andy Murray could be the man to back at odds of 9/2 with StanJames.com. The number four seed has won the past two Montreal Masters tournaments, beating Del Potro in the 2009 final and he then beat Nadal and Federer in successive matches to claim the 2010 title.
He looked in good form at Wimbledon and with a kind draw, with Mardy Fish and Stanislas Wawrinka the most dangerous players in his quarter, he could well match Ivan Lendl's 1989 feat of winning three successive Montreal titles.
