It would seem that the recently crowned Swiss Indoor Champion, Roger Federer will head the betting for this week’s Paris 1000 ATP Masters tournament, despite the fact that world number one and five time Masters winner in 2011, Novak Djokovic will be in the field. It is true that Rafael Nadal is not playing, but it still leaves Federer a huge task, to not only get the better of Djokovic, but also the in form Andy Murray, particularly as Federer has never won this tournament in his long and distinguished career. Currently ‘The Fed’ has odds to win the tournament of 11/5 with Unibet while Murray is at 3/1 with Djokovic third best at 5’s.
30 year old Federer in fact has had a poor year as far as winning tournaments is concerned, his win in Basel last week was his only win in 2011 and his withdrawal from the Shanghai 1000 Masters meant that he slipped behind Murray into 4th place in the ATP World Rankings. Nonetheless, he is Roger Federer and he is always a difficult opponent and it would surprise nobody in tennis to see him lift the trophy at the end of the week.
World number one, Djokovic who has swept all before him in 2011, with three ‘Grand Slam’ wins, five ‘Masters 1000’ titles would under normal circumstance be the favourite to win here too. However, he is carrying a shoulder injury which forced him to play below par last week in Basel where he lost in the semi final to upcoming Japanese star, Kei Nishikori. However, the ‘Serb’ appears resolute in his decision to play the tournament even though further injury could force him to miss out in the ATP World Finals later this month in London.
Andy Murray meanwhile appears to have struck the sort of form that Djokovic enjoyed earlier this year, winning three straight tournaments including the Shanghai 1000 Masters last month which became his second ‘Masters’ title of the season. He also won in Japan and Thailand showing the sort of form that would give him a great chance of winning this week and with odds of 3/1 he is probably well worth a bet.
The outcome of Paris 1000 will also confirm those players who will occupy the final three places for the end of season ATP World Tour Finals to be held at the O2 Arena in London towards the end of this month, a tournament that was won by Federer in 2010. Favourites to be awarded those place currently is Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic and world number eight Mardy Fish of the USA. All three are in the field this week and all three represent good chances to win.
Tsonga in particular usually plays well in this tournament and lifted the trophy back in 2008. With the added incentive of a place in the World Finals to go for and playing in front of a biased home crowd, would have to give him a big chance to win this week. He has odds currently of 11/2 with Unibet while his compatriot, Gael Monfils, who was runner up here in both 2009 and 2010 is an 11/1 chance.
As mentioned above, Berdych, ranked number six in the world currently, is another who is expected to make it through to play in London but he too could do with a good tournament this week. The ‘Czech’ in fact won in Paris in 2005, but he has had a lean time of things this year, appearing in only one final, which came at the China Open last month where he beat Marin Cilic of Croatia. That win at least showed him to be in decent form ahead of this tournament and with odds of 24/1 make him at the very least a worthwhile each way bet.
11/5 Roger Federer
3/1 Andy Murray
5/1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
11/2 Novak Djokovic
11/1 Gael Monfils
15/1 David Ferrer
24/1 Tomas Berdych
79/1 Mardy Fish
79/1 Andy Roddick
99/1 BAR
