Serena Williams will start favourite in the Australian Open Ladies Tennis Championship, which of course is the opening tennis Grand Slam of the year. Serena has won this tile four times already but amazingly has done so only in the years with odd numbers. She won in 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 but failed to get to the final in any of the years when the numbers were even. Nonetheless she is the 3/1 favourite with Ladbrokes, but if it is felt that the trend may continue then she might be one to lay!
Much of the hype this year will concern the Grand Slam comeback of 2004 winner, Justine Henin, who although will not be seeded, will be a big threat and who will be looking to emulate compatriot Kim Clijsters achievement of winning a Grand Slam in her comeback year. Henin has been given odds of 4/1 by most Bookmakers including Paddy Power.Clijsters in fact is the same price as Henin to win a second Grand Slam in a row after her success in the US Open back in September when she beat Serena Williams in the final. Others who will be of betting interest is the 2008 champion, Maria Sharapova who is also making a comeback, but hers is from injury rather than retirement. She has risen to number 14 in the world rankings and seems in determined mood ahead of the tournament. 2009 runner up and world number two, Dinara Safina should once again make the latter stages of a Grand Slam but we would not be keen to back her to win, but would certainly be keen to take the 16/1 on offer from Boylesports to back her each way.
