Despite his outstanding performance in the semi final the odds are stacked against Roger Federer when he takes on Rafael Nadal in the final of the French Open Championship at Roland Garros on Sunday.
Boylesports have made Federer the 9/5 underdog while they quote Nadal at 1/2 odds on to secure a sixth win in the tournament and a fourth victory in the final against Federer. The two arrived in the final after superb semi final wins, Federer defeated Novak Djokovic in four sets and in the process became the first man to defeat the ‘Serb’ this year, while Nadal confirmed his superiority over Andy Murray on clay, getting the better of the British number one, in three hard fought sets.
The two last met at Roland Garros in the 2008 final, where Nadal humbled the Swiss in three sets where he allowed Federer only four games. It was a display of awesome ruthlessness and confirmed Nadal as the new world one, a position which he not yet relinquished. Whether or not a similar scoreline will be ‘on the cards’ again on Sunday is hard to tell, but the following set betting odds are available from boylesports:
Nadal 3-0 @ 23/10
Nadal 3-1 @ 27/10
Nadal 3-2 @21/5
Federer 3-1 @ 11/2
Federer 3-2 @ 11/2
Federer 3-0 @ 7/1
The two men of course have been the dominant factors in men’s tennis over the last six or seven years, a period which has seen Federer secure a record breaking 16 Grand Slam titles, while Nadal has nine. Federer has won the French crown just once in 2009 when he took advantage of an early fourth round exit by an injured Nadal. He went on to beat Swede Robin Soderling that year, but he is still waiting to gain a first success over Nadal at Roland Garros. Should Nadal land the odds he will equal the record of six wins in the tournament held by the legendary Bjorn Borg, who will be in the crowd to witness proceedings.
There is little doubt that Nadal should win this match, however, with the new faster balls being used for the first time at Roland Garros this year the chances of a Federer victory has increased. He has certainly looked in the form of his life but then again so did Nadal against Murray on Friday, which suggests that the final could be a titanic battle between the greatest player the world has ever seen in Federer and the man most likely to succeed him Nadal.
1/2 Nadal
9/5 Federer
