Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle Odds: Fekix Yonger heads betting

The Grade 1 Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle is one of three Grade 1 contests on Friday at the Punchestown Festival. The weather has played havoc at the Irish track with chases having been moved or abandoned on Wednesday and Thursday, whilst the going is very heavy. Punters will no doubt check the form book on Friday to seek out the mudlarks, but truth is not many of these novices will have experienced ground like this.

Favourite for the race withPaddy Poweris the Willie Mullins trained Felix Yonger who was last seen finishing second behind Simonsig in the Neptune Novices' Hurdle over the same trip at Cheltenham last month. Owned by Graeme Wylie, the six year old's form was franked when Simonsig bolted up at Aintree last time out. Prior to that seven length defeat at Cheltenham (he was 11 lengths clear of the 3rd horse home), he won a Grade 2 at Naas in February on soft ground and also has a win on soft, heavy in places going. Trainer Willie Mullins is enjoying a good week and he's won this race five times in the last ten years, so it's no real surprise that the six year old is 9/4 favourite with Paddy Power.
