Oscar Odds: Colin Firth Looks Unbeatable After Golden Globe Success

Last night the much tipped performance of British actor Colin Firth, reaped the accolade of a much coverted Golden Globe for Best Actor.  Unsurprisingly, given the trend and opinion that the Golden Globes historically establish during the award season, bookmakers Paddy Power in their 'Oscar Odds'have Firth looking unbeatable at 1/16.

Whilst Cannes and Berlin have often vaunted the general trend of opinion and almost pride themselves in stepping away from the mainstream in rewarding less high profile films and performances, the Goden Globes are almost always a good marker for what will happen at the Oscar ceremony.  Certainly British actors playing royalty has always gone down well at the academy, with Judy Dench winning with her portrayal of Elizabeth I and Helen Mirren winning with 'The Queen', which of itself was a very mediochre movie. The Monarchy is certainly still a very exportable commodity and 'The King's Speech' a challenging role  for the eager thespian.
