BAFTA Odds As Sunday's Ceremony Approaches

This Sunday sees the British Academy taking centre stage in the Film Award merry go round, fortunately now placed before the Oscars, so that there is rather more interest than there has been in the past. All those contenders who have being doing the rounds of The Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) will be parading with their hesitant and well rehearsed smiles hoping that the British glitterati will reward them with a gong. The Betting Directory has been keeping an eye on the bookmakers' markets for the various events and has sought to warn the aspiring novelty punter of the transatlantic variables that occur during the awards season.

The film of the year that seems to be sweeping aside national boundaries is The Artist. A silent movie which has wowed the critics for its precocious and adept revisiting of the early days of Hollywood.  It offers innovation with nostalgia, rather than Scorcese's Hugo which offers innovation with technology. Films like Avatar swept the board at the Oscars with its use of 3D but it seems that whilst Hugo is a technical masterpiece the ability to enchant and tell a story is still valid. Hugo has been nominated for 11 oscars but none in the acting categories and similarly the British Academy has nominated Scorcese as Director -at 5/2 second favourite, but none of his cast for the acting awards.
