You know that the football season is well into gear when the third round of the FA Cup is being played. This year the FA Cup third round is being played as early as 2nd January and it will be interesting to see if the competition can throw up the usual few surprises, especially coming so quickly after the busy Christmas program.

As with the Premier League, Chelsea are 4/1 favourites to win and retain the FA Cup they won last season with Victor Chandler. The sheer size and quality of the Chelsea squad means that they can fire on three fronts as the season heats up with the London club also heading the betting for the Champions League with some bookmakers. Carlo Ancelotti's side have drawn Championship side Watford at Stamford Bridge in what should be an easy enough fixture and the bookies are almost certain to go very short on the home side when the match betting markets open.

Other favourites in the outright betting for the FA Cup feature the usual suspects with Manchester United 9/2 with bet365 to lift the famous trophy in May whilst Liverpool and Arsenal are next best at 13/2 with the same firm. United and Liverpool should have enough for their lower league opponents in Leeds and Reading respectively, whilst Arsenal have a tricky looking away tie at Upton Park to look forward to against West Ham. Blue Sq have priced up all four of these teams to win at 8/13, which looks a little on the skinny side.
Elsewhere, there are only two other all Premier League clashes with Aston Villa hosting Blackburn and Hull City traveling to Wigan. In a rather unexciting draw, Spurs, Stoke, Everton and Bolton all have easy draws on paper at home to Peterborough, York, Carlisle and Lincoln respectively. There's a hint of FA Cup romance up in the north-east as non league Barrow travel to Sunderland and there's every chance Championship side Nottingham Forest can take a Premier League scalp in round three for the second successive season as they face Birmingham at the City Ground.
There will be plenty of excitement come the 2nd January with three live matches over the weekend and the Betting Directory will have full match previews in the lead up.
