Lexus Chase Odds - Gold Cup Challengers could Emerge

The odds for the 2009 renewal of the Lexus Chase suggest that a competitive race is on the cards with several entries boasting realistic claims of winning the race. The race is the feature event of the four day Christmas Festival at Leopardstown Racecourse and has become a key trial ahead of the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the strength of this year's field would suggest that winner would surely look to challenge Kauto Star and Denman at Cheltenham in March.

Two of the past six winners of this race have gone on to triumph in the Cheltenham showpiece, with Best Mate winning en route to victory in his second Gold Cup in 2003 and most recently, Denman won this race in 2007 before defeating Kauto Star at the 2008 Festival.

Denman's connections have opted to bypass the Lexus Chase, leaving the Willie Mullins trained Cooldine with the opportunity to confirm his credentials as third favourite for the 2010 Gold Cup by landing this prize.

An impressive 16 length winner of the Royal and Sun Alliance Chase at last season's Cheltenham Festival, Cooldine was tipped to move on to big things after losing his his Novice status. However, a defeat when odds on favourite at the Punchestown Festival last time out in April means he has got it all to prove on his re-appearance in the Lexus Chase but at a best price of 6/1 with Ladbrokes, he could well be worth taking a chance on.

Other runners in with a chance include last year's Welsh National winner, Notre Pere, who is sure to relish the likely soft ground at Leopardstown and sure to be seen in a better light than when 50 lengths behind Kauto Star at Haydock last time out and is sure to be popular at 11/4 with Bet365.

Another lover of testing conditions is the antepost favourite for the race, Joncol, an improving type trained by Paul Nolan who made a return to winning ways at Punchestown in early December after a successful Novice campaign last term. However, despite his 11/4 quote and progressive profile, this race does not favour younger horse and if he was to win, Joncol would be only the second six year old to win the race in the past ten years.
