Hennessy Gold Cup Odds - Nicholls Keen On What A Friend

The Hennessy Gold Cup odds for this very exciting Grade 3 at Newbury has the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Denman as a shortening favourite. He is 7/2 with many leading Bookmakers, but is still 4/1 with VC Bet to win the race for a second time. To do so, the 9 year old will have to carry a huge 11-12, giving 12lb to the field and be back to his absolute best. Jockey, Ruby Walsh is clearly excited by the chance to ride Grand National favourite Denman again and has insisted that he can win, believing that not many of his twenty rivals on Saturday will be up to the task.

Denman's trainer, Paul Nicholls is not so sure and has openly stated that he believes that the horse will run a fine race and should finish in the top five. This is not a good sound-bite for those who want to back him. Champion trainer, Nicholls in fact fancies the chances of his What A Friend who has come in for widespread support all week. Nicholls has said that the horse has been trained specifically for the race and has a decided weight advantage over the rest. Others in the field who have come in for solid support is the Nicky Henderson trained, Barbers Shop who was second to the much improved Imperial Commander in the Paddy Power Gold Cup last December and then 7th behind, Kauto Star, in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. This however is his first run since then and perhaps the 6/1 on offer for him to win by VC Bet will be money wasted.

Each way support has been very evident for both the Evan Williams trained, State Of Play, who can be backed at 20/1 with Ladbrokes and the Alan King trained, Nenuphar Collonges who is a 25/1 also with Ladbrokes.

Another contender whose progress will be avidly followed is the Evan Williams entry, Cappa Bleu who was a very impressive winner of the Foxhunters Challenge Cup at the Cheltenham Festival in March. Great things are expected from this 7 year old, who is a proven stayer with great speed. He is currently an 8/1 chance with Paddy Power.

The Hennessy Gold Cup often serves as a trial for both the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National. This particularly important therefore for the likes of Denman who is favourite for the National and second favourite for the Gold Cup.
