The Ascot Gold Cup odds are showing that it is Yeats who will head into the race as favourite to land his 4th consecutive Gold Cup crown. Yeats has won this race for the last three years and will be hoping to claim a remarkable 4th win this week although this might be the toughest year so far. On his only appearance so far in 2009 he was a poor 6th place at Navan in April when he looked well short of his best. That day the ground was soft but even taking that into account he finished a long way behind the eventual winner which will be a worry for Yeats fans. Yeats is available at 9/4 with Paddy Power to win the Ascot Gold Cup on Ladies Day. It is difficult to tell whether his poor show was a simple lack of fitness which could be improved before the Gold Cup or that his best days are behind him but he must be respected on past performances.
Comprehensive Guide to The Ascot Gold Cup and all the main 2009 Royal Ascot Races
The top contenders are queueing up behind Yeats to take the top prize and one of those is the runner-up for the last two years, Geordieland. This is a good horse who has taken second the last two years and might finally be ready to take on Yeats with a serious chance rather than hope. At Sandown in May he won really well against Patkai who is another contender in this one and on the back of that performance he should go very close at Ascot. Geordieland is currently available at 11/4 with Ladbrokes to win the Ascot Gold Cup. We feel that this could be Geordieland's year finally but all eyes will be on Yeats to see how he runs as that could decide the fate of the race.
