The St James Palace Stakes odds are showing the Irish 2000 Guineas winner Mastercraftsman as the strong favourite for the race on Tuesday. The St James Palace Stakes is the highlight of the first day of the 2009 Royal Ascot meeting and there is no doubt that Mastercraftsman is set to be the star of the show. He came in 5th in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket when he was outpaced, but he bounced back from that at The Curragh in the Irish version of the race. He was certainly improved in that race and the Aidan O'Brien horse shortened significantly for this one in the market following that winning performance in the Irish 2000 Guineas. Mastercraftsman is as short as 10/11 with Paddy Power to win the St James Palace Stakes on Tuesday. Those are short odds but on past results he is clearly the class horse in this field and if on form is going to be extremely difficult to beat in the feature race of day 1 of Royal Ascot 2009.

There are other horses to consider in this one and one of the more credible runners is Delegator who many feel is not without a chance of defeating Mastercraftsman. Delegator went into the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket as one of the favourites and came in a good second place behind Sea the Stars and ahead of Mastercraftsman which shows he is well worth considering here.He next appeared at the Irish 2000 Guineas when he came in a poor 8th place and was never really involved as Mastercraftsman took the victory. These two contrasting performances make him difficult to gauge but on his best form he is a top class performer. Delegator is currently available at 4/1 with Boylesports to win the St James Palace Stakes. These two look like the top horses in this one and we are finding it difficult to look past Mastercraftsman for the win against the inconsistent Delegator.
