The Cheltenham Gold Cup odds favour a win for the 2007 champion, Kauto Star, but it is a much more open race than people imagine. Last year the race was won by Denman who headed a 1-2-3 for the Paul Nicholls stable, with Kauto Star second and Neptune Collonges third. The same three head the betting again, but Denman has slipped a long way out of favouritism following his disappointing return to the track in the recent Aon Chase. He is reported as extremely well at home but the signs do not look good for a repeat victory and he is currently out to 7-1 with Ladbrokes

Kauto Star, having won his third King George Chase on Boxing Day has shortened considerably in the betting and is now clear favourite to regain his crown at 15-8. Neptune Collonges meanwhile looked to be in great from when winning the Irish Gold Cup last month and there is a growing interest in the potential of this horse for the race. He is lightly raced this season and is said to be in great nick at home and Bookmakers have reported plenty of interest in him. He is best priced at 6-1 also with Ladbrokes
There has also been plenty of interest in the claims of Denman's Aon Chase conqueror, Madison De Berlais. There was no doubting his performance after he destroyed Denman by 23 lengths in the Sandown showdown. It is obvious that Denman had not returned to the form of last season after his heart operation but punters should perhaps look at the distance between Madison De Berlais and the third horse home that day, Albertas Run. There was over 40 lengths between them and Albertas Runwas second to Kauto Star in the King George but was much closer.
15-8 Kauto Star, 6-1 Neptune Collonges, 7-1 Denman, 8-1 Madison De Berlais, 10-1 Exotic Dancer, 12-1 Barbers Shop, 14-1 Albertas Run, 20-1 Air Force One, 25-1 War Of Attrition, 33-1 Imperial Commander, Star De Mohaison, Big Bucks, 40-1 Bar.
