Liverpool had made their seventh final, losing to AC Milan in 2007, while Arsenal lost to Barcelona in their first final in 2006. Due to the traumas suffered after the 1985 final between Liverpool and Juventus, where Liverpool fans were blamed for causing the terrible Heysel stadium tragedy. English Clubs were banned for five years from competing in the tournament and Liverpool themselves were banned for a further two years. In that period of time, many have argued that Liverpool had their best ever team under manager, Kenny Dalglish and would have certainly won at least one other Champions league. That of course will never be known, but nonetheless it is clear that British Clubs have a long and successful history in the tournament and also have a fantastic recent history.

It is certainly why Chelsea and Manchester united sit atop the betting lists before a ball has even been kicked in the tournament this season. Chelsea are 11/2 favourites to go one better than 2008 and United are 13/2 to retain the trophy. Liverpool and Arsenal are around 14/1 to win and the only other two clubs considered able to win are Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan. Indeed, the bookmakers have quoted 10/11 odds on for an English Club to win the Trophy this season. Odds of around 7/2 are also available for the final to be an all English affair.
