English Clubs were banned for five years from competing in the tournament and Liverpool themselves were banned for a further two years. In that period of time, many have argued that Liverpool had their best ever team under manager, Kenny Dalglish and would have certainly won at least one other Champions league. That of course will never be known, but nonetheless it is clear that British Clubs have a long and successful history in the tournament and also have a fantastic recent history.

It is certainly why Chelsea and Manchester united sit atop the betting lists before a ball has even been kicked in the tournament this season. Chelsea are 11/2 favourites to go one better than 2008 and United are 13/2 to retain the trophy. Liverpool and Arsenal are around 14/1 to win and the only other two clubs considered able to win are Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
