The first round of Champions League group matches gets under way on Tuesday 16th September as the long road to next year's final in Rome begins. The thirty two teams are split in to eight groups of four, with no one team from the same pot or same country able to be in the same group. The seedings were determined by Uefa and based upon teams recent performances in the Champions League. As a result, some of the best known teams and even recent Champions League winners were seeded in pots two to four. All eight groups therefore look to provide some tough challeneges for all the English sides. Of the British contingent, the draw was most kind to last year's runners up, Chelsea, who will have to face Roma, Bordeux and CFR Cluj in Group A.
Current Champions League holders, Man Utd have been drawn against Celtic in what is sure to be one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the competition. The two British sides are joined by Villareal and Aalborg in Group E. Both Sir Alex Ferguson and Gordon Strachan will be confident about the possibility of prgoressing from this group, however, Villareal are sure to be the side to poise a threat to both. The same cannot be said for Liverpool who have been drawn the extremely tough looking Group D. The 2005 Champions must face trips to PSV Eindhoven, Marseille and Atletico Madrid.
The runners up in 2006, Arsenal, must also over cme some of Europe's biggest names if they are to progress to the last sixteen of the competition. Arsene Wenger's side are in Group G and drawn alongside Porto, Fenerbache and Dynamo Kiev.
