Septimus odds set to tumble for the Melbourne Cup
Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien has had a remarkable year so far and is well on track to register the most Group One victories in a single season. The O'Brien stable has dominated flat racing at the top level in Ireland, France and Britain for several years now but nothing compares to his achievements so far in 2008. With just over two months remaining of the European season, O'Brien is sure to be entering the winners enclosure on a few more occasions, but it will be trips to the USA for the Breeders Cup and Australia for the Melbourne Cup which are likely to prove the biggest challenges for the Ballydoyle Supremo.
Of his stable stars likely to jet off to Santa Anita and Flemington, the Betting Directory team are very keen on the prospects of Septimus in the Melbourne Cup. This 5 year old son of Saddlers Wells is very lightly raced for his age and continues to show improvement with age and when stepping up in distance. He won his seasonal reappearance when winning a Group Three event at the Curragh in June and looks set to run at York's Ebor meeting in the Lonsdale Cup, where he ican be expected to show further progress. His target is then likely to be the Irish Field St Leger, where he should stand an excellent chance of putting an end to his Group One duck. The obivous target from there would be a tilt at the Melbourne Cup, with a $500,000 bonus on offer to any horse that wins the Irish St Leger and feature race of the Australian season.
Septimus is currently best odds of 10/1 with Bet365 to win the Melbourne Cup, odds which represent excellent value. If he wins at York, those odds are likely to be swallowed up by shrewd punters and will only go in one direction as the Meblourne Cup approaches. This horse could be potentially well handicapped against Southern Hemisphere competition and a bet now could prove a very wise antepost investment.
