New Approach and Duke of Marmalade set to clash in Juddmonte Betting

New Approach and Duke of Marmalade, two of the 2008 flat season's star performers are set to clash in the Juddmonte International Stakes betting on the first day of the York Ebor Festival on Tuesday. To say that this is a potentially mouth watering clash would be an understatement and could well turn out to be oen of the races of the year. The three year old Derby winner, New Approach, will be making his first appearance on a racecourse since his Epsom triumph back in June, whilst Duke of Marmalade will be looking to register his fifth consecutive Group One success of the season.

Many leading online bookmakers are already predicting this to be a popular betting event and have priced up the race early, with Ladbrokes installing the Aidan O'Brien trained Duke of Marmalade as the 4/7 favourite of the two, with Jim Bolger's New Approach a 6/1 shot.

Backers of Duke of Marmalade were given a real scare on his most recent run in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last month when he was headed in the final furlong by Papal Bull. However, the Ballydoyle star showed great character to fight back and get up to win by half a length. That victory was over the previously untried trip of 1 mile 4 furlongs for this son of Danehill but the Juddmonte sees him drop back to 10 furlongs - a distance which he has never won over. He ran in this race last year but was a well beaten fourth to another Derby win in Authorized. Their is no doubt that Duke of Marmalade has improved as a four year old but at such short odds and on the back of a busy summer it may be worth opposing him.

New Approach looks excellent value at 6/1 to win the Juddmonte; he was written off in the Derby and came home to answers his critics and backers can once again capitalise on him being underestimated to go on and win at the Knavesmire. It is common knowledge that new Approach has his quirks and trainer James Bolger certainly won't be winning any public relations awards for the way he handled the entry of this son of Galileo's entry in to the Derby but their is no getting away from the fact that New Approach is a class act. He should find further improvement for his break and providing he can settle in to the race, he will certainly be a big danger to Duke of Marmalde and at 6/1 each way backers should surely guarantee their money back froma horse that has never finished out of the top two in his entire career.
