Certainly on the evidence of the 2nd test England do not look capable of producing a winning team, they are struggling on all fronts and with Captain Michael Vaughan completely out of touch it is difficult to see how they can even draw a test let alone win two.
Nonetheless stranger things have happened and England can gain some confidence by the re-establishment of Flintoff in the team and his encouraging performance in the 2nd test. Other success's with the bat were opener Alistair Cook, who again made 50 and the rapidly emerging Stewart Broad who made his second fifty of the series. Unfortunately his bowling seemed to be a weak point and he will need to improve considerably if his place is to remain free from pressure.
The South Africans seem full of runs, with most of their top order batsmen making tons in the first two tests. They are very difficult to remove and England have found it hard to find a pitch where they can pressure them. Perhaps the Edgbaston pitch will help them out. Vaughan said after the 2nd test that he thought the spirit of the team was not quite as it usually is, that may be so but as Captain then he should look to himself to improve this area. He could start by playing a Captains innings, he has looked totally insecure against the tourist attack so far and his place at number three must surely now be under threat.
