The Northumberland Plate tip, for this Northumberland Plate betting handicap race is the French trained Far From Old, who is in at 14/1 for the big race at Newcastle. Locally known as the ‘Pitmens Derby’, the race is a 2 mile handicap and carries one of horse racing’s richest prizes, for races of this type. There is not too much known about Far From Cry, other than she is trained by John Hammond in Chantilly one of the most gifted trainers for identifying the right horse for big handicaps. Race goers might remember that he saddled Ratio at Royal Ascot in the 2003 Wokingham at Royal Ascot who all but landed the gamble but dead heated with Fayr Jag.

Hammond admits that the horse lacks experience against some of those running in the race, but he is very progressive and is in great from at home. Like most in the field , he has yet to run over two miles, but his breeding suggests strongly that he will get the trip and punters can rely on the fact that Hammond would not come such along way if he didn’t. We think that he may well be the surprise package and his odds are attractive enough to have at least an each way punt.
