Irish Derby Odds
The Irish Derby odds has encouraged considerable ante post backing for favourite New Approach, who is now a non runner. The Jim Bolger colt, has a bruised hoof and and has been withdrawn this morning. So that leaves the Michael Stoute’s Tartan Bearer, who was second at Epsom to New Approach and he is now favourite for the race. In fact the Irish Derby has attracted the top six home from the Epsom Derby; this would not happen unless there were genuine thoughts around that New Approach could get beaten.
Stoute also saddles Dr Fremantle, who faded in the final two furlongs at Epsom, but was heavily backed on the day. Perhaps the biggest surprise is Luca Cumani’s decision to run Curtain Call, although like at Epsom, the colt will only run if the ground suits. It is possible too that Cumani may have given the ride to Frankie Dettori, having been unimpressed by Jamie Spencer’s handling of him at Epsom. Curtain Call was mid-division at Epsom and it is very difficult to see how he can get much closer this time, even with Dettori on board. It is reported from the Curragh, that they expect the ground to be no better than good. The race can’t be considered unless thought is given to who the Ballydoyle stable select to run. At present, Washington Irving, 5th at Epsom stands his ground and is a 16/1 chance, while Alessandro Volta is listed at 14/1. Not bad odds for a stable that has just plundered four Group One’s at Royal Ascot.
