Ryder Cup Selection Odds
The Ryder Cup selection Odds for the European Team to meet the USA in September have had their first show and it is already clear that the ‘bookies’ are taking no chances. They list no fewer than eleven players at odds on to make the team and a further three or four at around evens. Considering the first ten pick themselves on merit, Ryder Cup Captain, Nick Faldo will have to think long and hard who will be his two ‘wild card’ picks.
At the moment the following ten players are occupying the automatic selection places: Lee Westwood, Miguel Angel Jiminez, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson, Oliver Wilson, Robert Karlsson, Graeme McDowell, Nick Dougherty and Martin Kaymer. If this was to remain, then Faldo’s two picks would come from probably the following choices: Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald, Colin Montgomerie, Darren Clarke, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Nicholas Fasth; what a very difficult pick that would be. As it is stands now, Harrington, Donald, Casey and Fasth are all odds on to be selected, meaning, that if the ‘bookies’ are correct, Ryder Cup heroes, Monty and Darren Clarke plus three of the others will be watching the competition from home.

Of course there is plenty of time to make the team but the pressure will start to build on both the players and Faldo as the summer approaches. It is inconceivable that Faldo would not want both Clark and particularly Montgomerie in his team and we suspect that privately he is praying to the golf gods to make the selection easier.
All this means is that that the next few Tournaments played both here and in the States will be as crucial as they will be exciting. It will make for compulsive viewing, as the players vie to get on to ‘Nick’s team’.
